Abstract

The rapid development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed various dimensions of Christian ministry, ranging from church administration to theological research and digital communication. While these advances create new opportunities for ministry, they also raise important ethical questions regarding the appropriate use of AI in spiritual leadership. This article examines the ethical challenges, moral risks, and opportunities associated with the responsible adoption of AI within the context of Christian ministry. The study employs a descriptive-analytical literature review complemented by theological reflection on recent scholarship concerning AI, digital ethics, and Christian leadership. The findings indicate that AI can enhance ministry effectiveness through administrative support, theological research, congregational data management, and digital communication. At the same time, uncritical reliance on AI may weaken spiritual disciplines, diminish the authenticity of the pastoral voice, and increase the risk of disseminating inaccurate theological information. The study also identifies shadow AI the unauthorized or non-transparent use of AI outside institutional oversight as an emerging ethical concern that threatens ministerial accountability and the security of pastoral data. This article argues that AI should be understood as a tool that supports ministry rather than a substitute for a living relationship with God or the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Its primary contribution is the development of an ethical framework for the responsible use of AI, grounded in transparency, moral accountability, digital literacy, spiritual discipline, and wisdom as essential virtues for Christian leaders in the digital age.
