The understanding of speaking in tongues as self-edifying is, actually, not only to be practised in the context of communal worship in the church but also can be undertaken in the context of social and secular life. In life relating socially and responding to life, situations require the ability to act in emotional maturity. This study aims to show the functions and benefits of speaking in tongues that can be practised for edifying spiritual maturity. By using the descriptive method of interpretive analysis on 1 Corinthians 14:4, it is found that the use of the Greek word oikodomeo in the text can be interpreted to edify oneself positively, through thinking and acting in maturity. In conclusion, speaking in tongues can be practised to edify emotion intelligently, so that believers can respond the life situations in an elegant and proportionate way.
